“Mauchi is like a visionary in search of the tangibility of one’s own dream..” — Saverio Langianni

“Indeterminazione” is the first anthological exhibition of Maurizio Chiocchetti (Mauchi), curated by Elisabetta Rizzuto.

For Maurizio Chiocchetti (Mauchi), who has been a photographer for over twenty years, photography is a visual gesture, a wei wu wei: an action without artifice, simple, conscious and immediate, that requires knowledge and technical mastery.

His is the gesture of non-temporality. It would be misleading to look for the logic of time in this collection of shots. As Kundera writes, “perhaps it is only in exceptional moments that we become aware of our years, while for most of the time we are ageless.” Indeterminazione is a vertical thought that captures the meanings of things happening together, in a dimension where there is no before and no after.

Maurizio Chiocchetti (Mauchi) sees the world in black and white, one inseparable from the other, the yin and yang from which everything originates. Black is cold, dark, deep and inert, and coexists with white, warm, light, epidermal and dynamic. In this chromatic geography, grey is an undefined colour, complementary to itself.

Maurizio Chiocchetti (Mauchi) forces the photographic gesture, composing graphics, signs and drawings. Like the “grass style” of Chinese calligraphy, his work is characterised by the search for a form, for a harmony that exists in nature and is grasped beyond the object of representation, often no longer recognisable even to the most attentive eye. Maurizio Chiocchetti (Mauchi) portrays the relationships between objects and, to observe their complexity, increases the contrast and draws on the multiscalarity of geometries, densities, boundaries and reflections.

According to Heisenberg’s Principle of Indeterminacy, the observer, in the act of observing, inevitably produces alterations in reality that cannot be determined. The same happens in the work of Maurizio Chiocchetti (Mauchi). Every representation of reality, through the photographer’s vision, is imprecise and indefinite, and has no given determination because it can assume several. Maurizio Chiocchetti (Mauchi) thus leads us to doubt the foundation of his own representations, bringing out the theme of the “illusory emptiness of appearances.”

The shots present a system of layerings and repetitions in which the dimension of reality continually escapes, giving way to synesthetic sensations wrapped in apparent silence and to playful, surreal and symbolic experiments of the subconscious.
